I am the mom you see in the grocery store with those weird, brightly colored, toe shoes. Sure, I know they are different, but that has never stopped me, I like to make people laugh, it good for the soul. Before after you point and giggle, find out why my family has chosen barefoot-ware!
Barefoot running has been scientifically categorized as a self-limiting exercise. In other words, the body can not over-stride or heal strike when barefoot because the immediate feedback to the runner is PAIN and the body auto-corrects the form. There is no way of causing overuse injuries. In other words, your body will not allow you to run incorrectly when barefoot. It is a perfect exercise completed as our bodies were created to do so.
Now compare this to the impacts of a running shoe with padding. Although modern society has, for generations believed that extra padding and support would make movement less impacting on the body, it actually causes 100% more problems. If the body is no longer allowed immediate feedback to adjust form. The runner may be able to perform more volume than their muscles and joints can handle resulting in injuries.
An interesting piece of information to consider the next time you shop for shoes with your family. My family has commited to barefoot shoes and are very happy with our decision.
Our seven year old, Bode, got his first pair last spring. (they do not make them small enough for my 5 year old). From an early age I have tried to encourage my children to play barefoot when ever possible. This teaches their body to move properly, the way it is designed to, without the interference of padding and rubber. I am not only concerned with the feet, but also the knees, hips and low back (to name few) which are all significantly effected by the inability for the body to auto-correct.
When my husband, Jesse first tried his barefoot shoes, he could not run. He was born with extremely flat feet and had been prescribed therapeutic soles which inevitably caused knee and hip pain. Within two days of running barefoot, the pain vanished. His body finally learned how to run correctly.
Think about your “running” past. Do you avoid running because it causes pain in your joints? Imagine if your body had a chance to move the way it is supposed to, pain free. Would you run?
